Walking Safaris in Tsavo National Parks – Guide, Wildlife & Conservation

Planning for walking safaris in Tsavo National Parks? Walking safaris are one of the activities visitors can enjoy in Tsavo National Park. To take part in a walking safari, you must get a ranger from one of the park offices. You will then drive to selected areas, leave your car in a safe location, and continue on foot with the ranger and your guide. The ranger will be armed to ensure your safety in case of any danger from wildlife.

Because the park is very large, walking safaris usually involve driving to different spots and then walking again. Your guide will know which areas are suitable for walking and which ones are better explored by vehicle.

Walking safaris offer a rewarding experience because they allow you to get much closer to wildlife compared to viewing them from inside a car. It is a great way to enjoy the park’s natural environment and observe animals in their natural behavior.

The Tsavo Conservation Area, also called the Tsavo Ecosystem, is a combination of wildlife conservation areas in southern Kenya. It includes Tsavo West National Park, Tsavo East National Park, South Kitui National Reserve, Chyulu Hills National Park, Amboseli National Park, and the Galana Conservancy.

This conservation area has the largest elephant population in the region, and possibly in all of Africa. About 40 percent of Kenya’s elephants live here. It is also home to more than 18 percent of the rare and endangered black rhinos, most of which are found in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary within Tsavo National Park.

The elephant population here is slowly increasing at a rate of about 4 to 5 percent per year, despite ongoing concerns about poaching. Although poaching is illegal, cases of wildlife trade have been reported, with 2011 being the worst year in recent times. The area also protects other rare species such as the critically endangered Hirola and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. Strong conservation efforts are in place to help protect these animals.
