The Tsavo area lies at an elevation between 180 and 1,000 meters above sea level. It is located in the southwestern region of Kenya, about 240 kilometers from Nairobi.
The eastern side of the Tsavo conservation area is mostly dry as it falls within the Taru Desert, while the western side is wetter with thicker vegetation.
This ecosystem supports the survival of the Big Five, which are among the most sought-after animals by visitors. These include the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and African elephant.
Tsavo is home to around 12,000 elephants, making up more than 35 percent of Kenya’s total elephant population.
The area also hosts several endangered species. These include the black rhino, Hirola (Africa’s rarest antelope), reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and African wild dog.
Tsavo is also a good habitat for the pangolin, one of the most targeted animals in illegal wildlife trade.
Birdlife in Tsavo is rich, with over 300 species recorded. The hills in the Tsavo conservation area are recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA).
Endemic species include the endangered Taita White-eye, the critically endangered Taita Thrush, and the Taita Apalis.
Only about 150 individuals of some of these species remain in the world.
