Tsavo Conservation Area – Wildlife, Parks & Safari Guide

The Tsavo Conservation Area is one of the largest protected ecosystems in Kenya. It includes Tsavo West National Park, Tsavo East National Park, South Kitui National Game Reserve, Chyulu Hills National Park, Amboseli National Park, and the Galana Conservancy. The protected portion of this area covers more than half of all protected land in Kenya, making it an important region for wildlife conservation.

This vast area is home to the largest elephant population in the region and possibly in all of Africa. About 40 percent of Kenya’s elephants live here. It also shelters more than 18 percent of the country’s rare and endangered black rhinos, with most of them protected in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary inside Tsavo National Park.

The elephant population in Tsavo has been growing steadily at a rate of about 4 to 5 percent each year, despite ongoing concerns about poaching. Although poaching is illegal, wildlife trafficking still occurs, with 2011 recorded as one of the worst years in recent history.

Apart from elephants and rhinos, the Tsavo Conservation Area is home to other rare species, including the critically endangered Hirola antelope and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. Conservation programs focus on protecting these species, restoring habitats, and reducing human-wildlife conflict.

Each part of the conservation area offers unique features. Tsavo East is known for its vast landscapes, the Yatta Plateau, Aruba Dam, and large herds of red-dusted elephants.

Tsavo West is more rugged, with attractions like Mzima Springs, Shetani Lava Flows, and a rhino sanctuary. Chyulu Hills National Park is a volcanic mountain range with caves and scenic hiking areas.

Amboseli National Park, located nearby, is famous for its views of Mount Kilimanjaro and large elephant herds. The South Kitui Reserve and Galana Conservancy add to the diversity of habitats and wildlife protection.

The Tsavo Conservation Area is the most visited wildlife region in Kenya. The majority of visitors explore Tsavo East, Tsavo West, and Amboseli, enjoying the rich wildlife and natural attractions that make this one of Africa’s most important conservation landscapes.
