The Entrance Gates and Airstrips in Tsavo West – Tsavo West National Park is a popular tourism destination in Kenya, known for its many enjoyable safari activities. Many tourists ask how to get to the park. Tsavo West is about 281 km from Nairobi and 206 km from Mombasa.
Visitors can travel by road or choose domestic flights from Nairobi via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport, or from Mombasa via Moi International Airport.
Flights are a good option for short trips or for those staying in lodges near the park.
Jipe Lake Airstrip
Lake Jipe Airstrip is located on the west coast of Lake Jipe inside Tsavo West National Park, about 45 minutes south of the Voi-Taveta highway. It has a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) office for park permits and public toilets for convenience. It serves flights from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport in Nairobi.
Kamboyo Airstrip
Kamboyo Airstrip is at the northern tip of Tsavo West, a few minutes southwest of the Mtito Andei Gate. It has a waiting lounge, a KWS post, and toilets.
The airstrip operates all year and receives flights from Nairobi and nearby areas.
Kasigau Gate Airstrip
Located on the southeastern border of Tsavo West, Kasigau Gate Airstrip is about 20 minutes from Mount Kasigau. It is one of the busier airstrips and serves flights from various Kenyan airports.
Facilities include a KWS checkpoint, offices, and toilets.
Kilaguni Airstrip
Situated at the western edge of Tsavo West, Kilaguni Airstrip is one of the most used in the park. It serves domestic flights to Kilaguni Safari Lodge and nearby attractions like Mzima Springs, Shetani Lava Flows, and Chaimu Crater. Facilities include a fuel station and toilets.
Finch Hatton Airfield
This private airstrip is near the northwestern boundary of the park and is owned by Finch Hatton Camp. It is less than an hour’s drive from several attractions.
Maktau Airstrip
Maktau Airstrip lies on the southern edge of Tsavo West near the Voi–Taveta road, close to the Maktau South Gate. It is convenient for travelers entering through this gate.
