Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks are in a semi-arid area, so the weather is generally hot and dry. Tsavo East is hotter than Tsavo West because they are at different elevations.
Both parks have a dry season and a wet season, with two main rainy periods each year.
In Tsavo East, daytime temperatures average about 30°C, while nights are around 20°C. In Tsavo West, daytime temperatures are around 29°C, and nights are cooler at about 18°C.
Tsavo East National Park Weather
- The park is hot and dry with very little rain.
- Wildlife viewing is best because vegetation is thin, and animals gather at waterholes and the Aruba Dam.
- This is peak tourist season, so the park is busier and prices are higher.
- Bright, sunny days are great for photography, but it can be very dusty.
- Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a sunhat, and a scarf.
Wet Season (November – December & March – May)
- The short rains fall from November to December; the long rains from March to May.
- April and November are the wettest months.
- Afternoon showers are common.
- The park becomes greener, and it is the best time for bird watching as migratory birds arrive.
- Fewer tourists visit, so prices are lower.
- Roads may be muddy and slippery.
- Bring a raincoat or waterproof poncho.
Tsavo West National Park Weather
- Hot days, minimal rain, and sparse vegetation make game viewing easier.
- This is also peak season, so there are more visitors and higher rates.
- Clear skies are perfect for photography, but it can be dry and dusty.
- Carry water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a sunhat, and a scarf.
Wet Season (November – December and March – May)
- Same rainy periods as Tsavo East, with April and November as the wettest months.
- Occasional afternoon showers are common.
- The park becomes greener and is excellent for bird watching.
- Fewer visitors give a more private safari experience, and prices are lower.
- Roads may be muddy and slippery.
- Bring a raincoat or waterproof poncho.
January and February are short dry months between the rains and are also a good time to visit.
Both parks can be enjoyed all year, depending on your preferences and planned activities.
