Shetani Caves & Volcanic Cones – Tsavo National Park Travel Guide

The Shetani Caves and Volcanic Cones are among the main attractions in Tsavo National Park. The caves were formed by volcanic activity many years ago, when molten lava cooled and hardened to create unique rock formations. The name “Shetani” means “devil” in Swahili, a name given by locals who believed the lava flow was the work of evil spirits.

Inside the caves, it is very dark, so visitors should move carefully and carry a flashlight. The rock surfaces are rough and sharp in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The caves are sometimes called the “hyena’s house” because hyenas are occasionally seen sheltering there. Other small animals and birds can also be spotted around the area.

After exploring the Shetani Lava Caves, visitors can also take a trip to the nearby Chyulu Hills. These green, hilly landscapes offer more scenic views and are part of the same volcanic region.

The Shetani Caves and Volcanic Cones can be visited at any time of the year. The lava flows remain the same in all seasons, and each visit offers a different experience. Whether during the dry or wet season, the area has something interesting to see.

The protected portion of the Tsavo Conservation Area covers more than half of Kenya’s total protected land. This vast area is home to the largest elephant population in the region and possibly in all of Africa. About 40 percent of Kenya’s elephants live here. The area is also home to over 18 percent of the rare and endangered black rhinos, most of which are found in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary inside Tsavo National Park.

Elephants in the region are slowly increasing in number, with a growth rate of about 4 to 5 percent per year, despite poaching still being a concern. Although poaching is illegal, cases of wildlife trade have occurred, with 2011 being the worst year in recent times.

The area also shelters other rare animals such as the critically endangered Hirola and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. Conservation programs are in place to protect these species and ensure their survival for future generations.
