Rhinoceroses in Tsavo – There are two main species of rhinoceroses in Africa: the black rhino and the white rhino. Tsavo National Park is mainly home to the black rhino.
Although the park has a small number of both black and white rhinos, the black rhino is more common here. They are easily recognized by their hooked upper lips, which they use to grasp leaves and twigs.
Black rhinos are solitary by nature and are often more aggressive than white rhinos. They are also classified as endangered, making them one of the most sought-after animals for travelers visiting Tsavo.
In the early years of Tsavo National Park, poaching was a major problem and caused a severe decline in rhino numbers. Rhino horn was highly valued on the illegal market, which put these animals at great risk.
After strict anti-poaching laws were introduced and increased conservation efforts were put in place, the population began to recover.
Today, Tsavo is home to about 20% of Kenya’s total rhino population, with roughly 200 rhinos in the park. They are also part of the famous “Big Five” that many visitors come to see.
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary
One of the key areas for rhino conservation in Tsavo West National Park is the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. This protected area was created to ensure the survival of the endangered black rhino. It offers a safe environment where they can live, breed, and be monitored by rangers.
The sanctuary is home to more than 80 black rhinos and contains five waterholes that attract the animals, making sightings more likely. Currently, around 70 black rhinos live within its boundaries.
Visitors have a good chance of spotting these shy and elusive creatures, especially during early morning or late afternoon drives when they are more active.
A visit to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary not only provides the chance to see black rhinos up close but also supports ongoing conservation work. By visiting, travelers contribute to the funds needed for protection, anti-poaching patrols, and habitat management.
Seeing a black rhino in its natural home is a rare and special experience. Tsavo’s efforts in rhino conservation continue to play an important role in protecting this iconic species for future generations.
