Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park were officially declared national parks in April 1948, making them the oldest protected areas in Kenya. They are named after the Tsavo River, which flows from west to east.
Together, the two parks cover more than 22,000 km², making them the largest wildlife-protected area in Kenya. Tsavo East is the largest, covering 13,747 km², while Tsavo West covers 7,065 km².
