Athi River Town – Location, Industry & Residential Growth Near Nairobi

Athi River is a town in Machakos District, about 30 kilometers from Nairobi. It is easily accessible via the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. Administratively, it falls under Mavoko Constituency in Machakos County.

According to the 2019 census, Athi River has a population of 81,302 people and covers an area of 693 square kilometers. The climate in this region is generally warm and mild, with significant rainfall throughout the year, making it suitable for both industrial and residential development.

The town is one of Kenya’s key industrial centers. It is well known for its cement production, with six major factories located in the area: Bamburi Cement, Mombasa Cement, East African Portland Cement Company, Savannah Cement, National Cement, and Athi River Mining. The presence of these factories has created employment opportunities and boosted the town’s economy.

In addition to its industrial growth, Athi River is becoming a popular residential area because of its close proximity to Nairobi. Many people who work in the capital choose to live here, benefiting from slightly lower housing costs and less congestion. New housing estates and apartment complexes have been developed to meet the growing demand for accommodation.

Athi River is located opposite Kitengela town, just three kilometers away. While the two towns are close neighbors, they belong to different administrative regions. Athi River is in Machakos County in the former Eastern Province, while Kitengela is in Kajiado County in the former Rift Valley. This geographical closeness means residents of both towns often share social and business links.

The Nairobi–Mombasa Highway is the main route connecting Athi River to the rest of the country, and there are also railway services passing through the town. This makes it easy to transport goods from the industrial area to different markets in Kenya and beyond.

Athi River continues to grow both in size and importance. With its mix of industry, residential areas, and transport links, it plays a vital role in the economy of Machakos County and serves as a gateway between Nairobi and the southern and eastern parts of Kenya.
