Tsavo River – Wildlife, History & Safari Guide in Tsavo National Parks

The Tsavo River is in the coastal province of Kenya and is one of the most important rivers in Tsavo West National Park. It starts from the western end of the park, near the Tanzanian border, and flows eastwards until it meets the Athi River near the center of the park. The two rivers join to form the Galana River, which continues through Tsavo East National Park before eventually flowing into the Indian Ocean.

The river plays a vital role in the park’s ecosystem. It is a major source of water for many animals in the region, especially during the dry season. The river supports a variety of fish species and attracts wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and predators that come to drink or hunt near the water. Large numbers of crocodiles can be found in parts of the river, especially in the Galana River section, and they are a common sight for visitors on safaris.

The Tsavo River is also known for its place in history. In 1898, during the construction of the Kenya–Uganda Railway, the area became infamous for the Tsavo Man-Eaters incident, when two maneless lions reportedly killed several railway workers. This story has become one of Tsavo’s most well-known legends and is still told to visitors today.

The Tsavo River can be visited at any time of the year. However, the best months are during the dry seasons, from June to October and from January to February. During these times, the water levels drop, and animals gather in greater numbers along the riverbanks in search of water, making wildlife viewing easier.

In the wet season, the river is fuller, and the surrounding vegetation is greener. While wildlife may be more scattered during this time, the scenery is more lush, and bird-watching is excellent.

Whether visiting for its wildlife, history, or natural beauty, the Tsavo River is an essential part of any safari in Tsavo National Parks. Its waters sustain both the animals and the landscape, making it one of the most important natural features in the region.
