Mtito Andei Gate is the main entry point to Tsavo West National Park. It is located in the western part of the park, in Mtito Andei village, Makueni District. The gate is named after the village where it stands and can be reached by road, rail, or air.
The Kenya Wildlife Service park headquarters is also located here. By road, the gate is about 233 kilometers southeast of Nairobi. The nearest town is Mtito Andei, which is managed by a town council. This gate is one of the two main gates for entering Tsavo West National Park.
At Mtito Andei Gate, visitors will find craft shops and refreshment rooms where they can buy gifts or snacks. Public toilets are also available.
All park entry fees must be prepaid at the bank, as cash payments are not accepted. Credit card payments are available at the park gates. It is important to note that park gates are the only official entry and exit points.
The gates of Tsavo West National Park are where visitors officially begin their safari. They also serve as checkpoints where entry procedures are completed. Before entering, travelers must check in with park authorities at the gate. The park has gates located in different directions to make access easier from various parts of Kenya.
Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya’s premium parks and receives many tourists every year. It is a key destination on most Kenya safaris. The park is also known as the “Park of the Man-Eaters” because of the lions that killed many railway workers during the construction of the East African Railway.
All gates of Tsavo West National Park are connected by good roads and can be accessed from different locations. Visitors are not limited to entering through the main gate only and can use any of the five gates to access the park. The main gate, Mtito Andei Gate, is along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway (A109 Road).
