Tsavo Ecosystem – Wildlife, Communities & Cultural Heritage

The Tsavo ecosystem supports the survival of the Big Five, which are among the most sought-after animals by visitors on safari. These include the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and African elephant.

There are about 12,000 elephants in this area, making up more than 35 percent of Kenya’s total elephant population.

Some of the notable endangered species found in the Tsavo conservation areas include the black rhino, hirola (Africa’s rarest antelope), reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and African wild dog.

The area is also a good habitat for the pangolin, which is one of the most targeted animals in the illegal wildlife trade. Other mammals found here include cheetah, zebra, gazelle, impala, lesser kudu, and oryx.

The Tsavo ecosystem is also rich in birdlife. Endemic species include the endangered Taita white-eye, and the critically endangered Taita thrush and Taita apalis.

There are only about 150 individuals of these birds left in the world.

Vegetation in the Tsavo ecosystem is varied and includes savanna grasslands, palms, fig trees, woodlands, and riverine vegetation. There are more than 1,000 plant species here, including about 40 forest species, with around 20 that are endemic to the area, such as the endangered African violet.

The Tsavo region is also home to several communities, including the Taita, Taveta, Akamba, Luo, and Watta. These groups have a rich cultural heritage, making the area welcoming for visitors.

According to the 2019 census, the Tsavo ecosystem has a population of about 340,000 people.

Farming is a common activity in the area, with crops such as bananas, cotton, sugarcane, fruits, and coffee grown here.

The Tsavo ecosystem and conservation area also have important cultural sites linked to the region’s history and heritage.

These include World War II battle sites in Salaita-Taveta, as well as a musical legacy, with one of Kenya’s most celebrated composers, Fadhili Williams, who produced the famous song Malaika in the late 1950s.
