Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary – Black Rhino Conservation in Tsavo West

Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is found at the foothills of the Ngulia Hills in Tsavo West National Park. It covers about 80 square kilometers and is surrounded by a strong electric fence to protect the wildlife inside.

The sanctuary was created mainly to protect the endangered black rhino, which was once on the brink of extinction due to heavy poaching.

Today, the sanctuary is home to about 70 black rhinos. Visitors also have a chance to see other animals such as elephants, leopards, and various antelope species. The black rhinos here are mostly shy and prefer to stay in thick bushland.

They are browsers, meaning they feed on leaves, shoots, and branches, unlike grazers that feed on grass. They are more active at night, but patient visitors can still spot them during the day, especially around watering points.

The sanctuary has several waterholes that attract wildlife, making it easier for visitors to see different species in one place. The protected environment also ensures that the rhinos and other animals are safe from poachers, thanks to constant monitoring and anti-poaching patrols.

The dry season, from June to October and January to February, is the best time to visit Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. During these months, the grass is short, making it easier to spot animals.

Black rhinos, leopards, and other shy species are more likely to be seen as they come out to drink water.

In the dry months, most animals gather near rivers, dams, and other water sources, especially during the hottest part of the day. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are ideal for sightings because animals are more active before and after the midday heat.

A trip to Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary offers visitors a rare opportunity to see one of Africa’s most endangered animals up close. It is also a good place to learn about the conservation efforts being made to protect these species.

Combined with the wider Tsavo West National Park experience, the sanctuary adds great value to any safari in Kenya.
