Masai Mara National Reserve is located in Kenya, on the border with Tanzania. It joins with Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to form one large wildlife area.
The park is named after the local Maasai people who live in the region. It covers an area of about 1,510 square kilometers.
One of its well-known features is the Talek River and the Mara River, from which the park gets the second part of its name. These two rivers drain the area and also provide water for the Maasai and their cattle.
The Masai Mara ecosystem includes several conservation areas such as Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Koiyaki, Lemek, and Kimintet ranches.

The park is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa. It is known for having a large and healthy population of wildlife, with many species found here in high numbers.
All of Africa’s Big Seven animals, except gorillas, live in the Masai Mara.
Visitors can see lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, giraffes, zebras, baboons, crocodiles, waterbucks, warthogs, topis, gazelles, black rhinos, and many species of monkeys and birds.
The Maasai People
The Maasai are a pastoral community living along the northern border of Tanzania and the southern border of Kenya. Traditionally, their lives depended almost entirely on livestock.
Cattle play an important role in their culture, food, and clothing. Maasai clothing is unique, often decorated with colorful beads that are also used to make jewelry.
The Maasai live around the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, where fertile plains provide rich grasslands for grazing cattle. Roles in their community are based on age.
Men usually herd livestock and have a central role in community life. Wealth is often measured by the number of cattle and, for men, the number of wives they have.
