The Kikuyu People of Kenya – History, Culture & Traditions

The Kikuyu of Kenya (Agikuyu or Gikuyu) are a Bantu ethnic group native to central Kenya, with smaller numbers living in Tanzania. With a population of about 8,148,668, they make up 17.13 percent of Kenya’s total population, making them the largest ethnic group in the country.

The name “Kikuyu” comes from the Gikuyu word for water. “Gikuyu” itself is derived from the word “Mukuyu,” which means sycamore fig tree. “Agikuyu” translates to “Children of the Great Sycamore” in the Kikuyu language. Alternative names for the Embu, Gikuyu, and Meru communities include “Nyumba” or “Mumbi,” meaning “Pot House” or “Creator.”

The Kikuyu are Bantu-speaking people who live mainly near Mount Kenya, in the south-central highlands. At the end of the 20th century, their population was estimated at about 4.4 million, making up around 20 percent of Kenya’s population.

The Kikuyu trace their ancestry to the Thagicu, a Bantu-speaking group that migrated from Central Africa to East Africa in the late 11th century. The Thagicu were the ancestors of the Kikuyu and several other ethnic groups in the region.

When they settled on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, the Thagicu began clearing forests to prepare the land for farming. They introduced new skills such as pottery-making, iron-smelting, and crop cultivation. These skills were also taught to the local foraging and nomadic groups, leading to significant cultural changes in the area.

Archaeological evidence, supported by radiocarbon dating, shows that the Mount Kenya region had developed new styles of pottery and iron-smelting as early as the 12th or 11th century. This points to a long history of farming and craftsmanship in the area.

Today, the Kikuyu remain an influential community in Kenya, known for their farming traditions, entrepreneurship, and strong cultural identity. They continue to play an important role in Kenya’s economy and politics while preserving many of their traditional customs and beliefs.
